International Visitors

Provided they meet the same requirements for Australian citizens (other than residency) any overseas visitor on a valid visa may  marry in Australia.

 

Without going into all detail, basically you must not already be married, are both over 18 years of age, meet the relationship criteria, are man and woman, complete the ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ and lodge the original or faxed copy with your marriage celebrant a minimum of 1 clear month prior to the marriage, provide the necessary proof of age (original birth certificate—NOT a photocopy, or non-Australian passport) and can speak and understand English OR have an interpreter, you are welcome to be married in Australia. The Notice of Intended Marriage may be lodged from outside Australia.

 

Australia does not require blood or any other medical tests, certificate of single status or published ‘bans of marriage’. Nor are there any residency requirements. (I guess that you could be married in the transit lounge of the airport, if you really wanted to do it Los Vegas style! Though I can’t imagine that anyone would not want to honeymoon – at least briefly – in beautiful Victoria.)

Your marriage celebration can be as formal or informal as you wish, at a venue of your choice.  Melbourne is renowned for its beautiful gardens, beaches, wineries, wedding chapels and receptions venues, restaurants and much more.

 

Fiancé/e (Prospective Marriage) Visas

If you wish to emigrate to Australia to marry your Australian fiancé, you will need to obtain an appropriate visa from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The visa is usually valid for up to nine (9) months. NOTE: Marriage in Australia, or to an Australian resident, does not entitle automatic citizenship, or any permanent residential status.
