Other than for the wide range of options available to you (eg venue, reception, wedding party, style and size of wedding, wedding dress, vows, celebrant) marriage in Australia should  be simple and straightforward for most. Whilst celebrants   cannot resolve all of the above issues, a good civil celebrant can greatly assist make your special day happy and stress free.

 

Price is important to all of us. Celebrant fees can range between $250 and $1000+. Some of the variance is clearly justified by the complexity of the ceremonies, whilst some is less easily explained. My fees and ceremonies range from $275 for a basic legal ceremony, through to around $600 for a ceremony highly demanding in time and complexity. My typical standard ceremony for a weekend evening costs around $450. I am pleased to offer a discount for holders of the Commonwealth Health Card.

 

However, don’t just focus on price! Many of today’s authorised marriage celebrants have been well trained prior to authorisation, and undertake a further mandatory annual Ongoing Professional Development. The better ones will usually be active members of at least one professional association. Doing more than just the minimum OPD is essential to remaining fresh and up-to-date. Your chosen celebrant should be able to guide you with ceremony options, incorporating those you want in an individually crafted custom ceremony, accurately reflecting your wishes.

 

In addition to your celebrant’s expertise and fees, it is very important that you feel comfort with the person, able to relate and trust him/her to meet her/his promises.

 

Length of appointment or number of marriages performed should only be two of the factors to consider. Try to gauge that they haven’t become stale or blasé.
